December 2, 1921 - January 26, 2016
Gladys M. Middleton passed away Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2016, at WCA hospital in Jamestown, N.Y. She was born Gladys Marie Warner on Dec. 2, 1921, in Astoria, N.Y., and raised by her mother, Anne Marie Warner and her grandmother, Magdalena Ley. Gladys attended Julia Richmond High School in Manhattan on scholarship, graduating with honors. Following graduation, she worked at the British Exchange in New York City, where she met her husband, Jim. Happily married for 67 years until his death, they made their home in Northport, L.I., until retiring to Jamestown, N.Y. Gladys had a lifetime love affair with Northport and spent endless hours at the quaint harbor-front or soaking up the sun at the surrounding beaches. An avid golfer, jogger and traveler, she also was a loyal (and vocal) fan at her two son's sporting events. She worked for many years at the VA hospital as a medical records supervisor. After moving to Jamestown, she continued her hospital involvement as a volunteer at WCA. Her family was the center of her life. She was a spectacular and loving grandma, a wonderful cook, and a spinner of numerous tall tales. A source of joy, laughter and unending surprises, Gladys was an original. She is survived by her two sons: Carl (Robin) Wilmington, N.C., and Clark (Jeanne) of Northport, N.Y.; she was an adored grandmother to: Dawn of New York City, Kirsten of Austin, Texas, James of Wilmington, N.C., and MacNeal of London, UK, all of whom she unapologetically spoiled as much as possible; and two great-granddaughters, Elena and Pearl of New York City. Friends will be received at Peterson Funeral Home, Frewsburg, N.Y., on Saturday, Jan. 30, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. A brief homily will be offered by John Gifford, a lay minister and close family friend at 6:15 p.m. A family celebration of her life is planned for the coming year. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
